Non-Agricultural Products’ Names in the EU

oriGIn is in favor of the establishment of a EU system for the recognition and protection of non-agricultural GIs with the following characteristics:

  • It should require the proof of a solid link between the products (whose names are the object of a request of protection) and their geographical area;
  • It should provide simple and transparent procedures;
  • It should not create confusion with the existing European GIs systems.

With such characteristics, a EU system for non-agricultural GIs would, on the one hand, contribute to add value to the huge European potential in terms traditional handicrafts, largely benefiting SMEs. On the other hand, it would help the EU in bilateral negotiations with countries seeking protection for their non-agricultural GIs in the common market, as well as in the implementation of the WIPO Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement.
