11/04/2024-World IP Day 2024: Achieving SDGs and building a common future

Dear member,

On 26 April, the global Intellectual Property (IP) community will celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day 2024 (World IP Day 2024)  – dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . This will be an opportunity to show how IP can encourage the solutions towards building a common future.

oriGIn encourages all its members to celebrate the World IP Day 2024, emphasizing through short videos for social media and press releases the following:

  1. How – by their very nature – GIs contribute promote sustainable agriculture, protect biodiversity, and support rural and craft communities;
  2. The efforts GI groups and sectors are making to respond to the emerging sustainability challenges.

To develop your visual campaign for April 26, you can use elements developed by WIPO (click here).

Likewise, here are some ideas to develop your arguments:

  • SDGs 8 (decent work and economic growth) and 10 (reduced inequalities): you can mention the data concerning the fair remuneration of primary producers and other actors within your value-chain;
  • SDG 5 (gender equalities): you can mention the role played by women in your GI value chain and/or your group;
  • SDGs 7 (affordable and clean energy) and 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure): you can mention the level of innovation you are introducing to respond to emerging sustainability challenges, and how you ensure it is compatible with the preservation of the tradition of your GI;
  • SDG 15 (life on land): you can mention the plant varieties, animal breeds and biodiversity related to your GI;
  • SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals): you can mention how the governance within your groups is an asset to address common issues among producers and other economic actors within the value-chain and solve problems, including the scale-up effect towards sustainability.

Please, do not hesitate to refer to some of the oriGIn recent publications in this area:

  1. “The Potential of Geographic Indications to Contribute to Sustainable Intellectual Property Rights” (INTA Bulletin, March 2024);
  2. “Developing a roadmap towards increased sustainability in geographical indication systems” (FAO-oriGIn, March 2024).

Finally, for the ones attending the celebration of 30th anniversary of the “Consejo Regularor del Tequila” and the 50th anniversary of the denomination “Tequila” in Guadalajara later this month, one entire session of the seminar on 26 April will be dedicated to GIs and sustainability

On 26 April, please do not hesitate to share your videos and/or press releases with us! #WorldIPDay #GeographicalIndications.
