Traditional origin products constantly face the challenge of third parties taking advantage of their reputation in an effort to sell fake products. Countless examples, such as fake “Champagne” being sold as if it was an original product coming from the Champagne area in France or products being marketed as “Colombian Coffee” that are in fact no 100% Colombian in origin, illustrate this problem. As a result, the phenomenon of counterfeit products has been increasing over the years and, in this context, millions of jobs, as well as the reputation of various geographical indications are at stake. Why making the effort to produce a high quality product, abide by strict internal rules and gain reputation in the market place, if anyone can use a geographical name and the reputation producers have built within decades of hard labour?

At oriGIn we think this is unfair. To counter this, we have become the voice of worldwide producers of origin products within those international, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Union and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), where the future of Geographical Indications is decided.
