24/06/2015 – The trade mark reform package and its impact on GIs

In 2009, a review of the European trade mark system was launched. In 2013, the Commission made proposals to reform the Directive 2008/95/EC approximating the laws of the Member States relating to trade marks and the Council Regulation 207/2009/EC on the Community trade mark (the overall reform is identified as “trade mark reform package”). In June, the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council (“trilogue discussions”) reached a political agreement on the trade mark reform package. The final vote of the European Parliament in plenary session should take place in September 2015.
