manualgTLDwebA CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT: A FEW QUESTIONS FOR GI GROUPS AND EXPERTS

Do you know the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)?

Are you familiar with the concept of generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)?

Do you know that literally thousands of such domains are emerging?

Are you aware of the way second level Internet domains operate?

Do you fully understand the challenges for GIs posed by such domains?

Are you aware of the existing (while limited) mechanisms to protect GIs in the Internet domain names’ system? And do you know the costs associated with such mechanisms?

AN ANSWER BY oriGIn: OUR LATEST PRACTICAL MANUAL

If the answer to at least one of these questions is NO…

… then your association should, as soon as possible, take a look at the oriGIn latest practical manual (please click on the link below):

Challenges for Geographical Indications (GIs) in the context of the ICANN new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) - A Manual for GIs Groups to Navigate the New Environment
(by Scott Gerien - managing director of the law firm Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty and Christopher Passarelli, senior counsel with Dickenson, Peatman & Fogarty).

oriGIn GOALS: KEEP PROVIDING OUR MEMBERS WITH PRACTICAL TOOLS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND NEW CHALLENGES FOR GIS & KEEP SHAPING THE GLOBAL DEBATE ON GIs

  1. This manual intends to provide practical information and guidance to GIs groups and experts, which need to navigate the new Internet domain names’ environment.
  2. By showing the potential increase in legal expenses for GI groups, which must monitor and enforce intellectual property rights against third parties filing top level as well as second level domains corresponding to, or conflicting with, the GIs they represent, oriGIn hopes that this manual will promote, at the global level, a thorough discussion on the most effective ways to ensure an effective protection for GIs (and IPRs in general) in the Internet domain names’ environment.
