“We would like to thank European policy-makers for the important work carried out over the last five years in the field of geographical indications. Enhanced protection for spirits, simplification of procedures for wines and international agreements of mutual recognition – often in the context of free trade agreements improving market access – are important advancements to be acknowledged”, says Claude Vermot-Desroches, oriGIn President.
“The challenges ahead remain substantial. First of all, sustainability issues, such as environment preservation and the fair remuneration within the value chain, need a prompt response. Other areas where the European institutions must focus their attention in the next legislature are the further simplification of procedures and the adoption of new rules to protect geographical indications in the context of e-commerce and Internet domain names. These issues are both part of the debate for a new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). On the other hand, while the continuation of an open trade policy including geographical indications should remain a priority, groups must be systematically involved in trade negotiations when their rights are at stake”, continues Massimo Vittori, oriGIn Managing Director.
“In view of the forthcoming European elections, oriGIn EU and its members wish to continue to engage in a constructive dialogue with the European institutions, so that geographical indications can further develop and meet the expectations of both producers and consumers. In this context, we have published today a document identifying our priorities for the 2019-2024 legislature in terms of sustainability, protection and simplification, which is now available on our website”, concludes Mathilde Chareyron, oriGIn EU Representative.
