“This is our first general assembly since the establishment of oriGIn Italia. Such a move was not only symbolic. It shows our commitment to work in a coordinated manner with our European and worldwide partners – organized around oriGIn EU and oriGIn world – to tackle the major issues that the sector of geographical indications faces in the 21st century. At the EU level, we want to renew our efforts with policymakers for the further simplification of the system, the coherent implementation of the existing rules on evocation and administrative protection as well as finding a coherent response to the economic, social and environmental challenges raised by sustainability. At the international level, we continue our campaigns to strengthen the protection of geographical indications in third markets through bilateral agreements and the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement, and on the Internet”, says the President of oriGIn Italia Cesare Baldrighi.
“We welcome the decision of establishing oriGIn Italia, which follows the example of France, Spain, Portugal, Georgia and Mongolia in creating national antennas within our worldwide alliance. We hope groups in other countries will follow this example, to reinforce the coordination of our campaigns and the coherence of the message we wish to convey. Geographical indications represent a powerful intellectual property as well as sustainable development tool, which creates value for millions of producers, processors and distributors around the world. Likewise, they contribute to reinforce the transparency of an open multilateral trading system, as they serve the interests of consumers in search of unique qualities and authentic stories behind the products they wish to buy”, concludes the oriGIn of President Claude Vermot-Desroches.
