This week, the European Parliament voted on the proposals concerning the Common Market Organisation & Quality regulation as well as the Strategic plans put forward by the European Commission in the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy Reform.
oriGIn EU acknowledges the efforts made by the Rapporteurs as well as their shadow rapporteurs and welcomes the outcome of the vote, which reinforces the European Geographical Indication system, both for Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) in the wine and food sectors.
“In the current economic context, strengthening the European system of geographical indications, in particular with regard to the protection against usurpation and the misuse of reputation, as well as the availability of effective legal instruments to ensure a better distribution of added value within the sectors, are strategic objectives to pursue with priority. We are pleased to see today the European Parliament supporting the European Commission’s proposal and setting a clear path for the future of PDO and PGI in the European Union.” says Massimo Vittori, Managing Director of oriGIn.

oriGIn EU’s members also appreciate the emphasis given by the European Parliament on sustainable agriculture, to which PDO and PGI can give a tremendous contribution.
"European GIs generate considerable economic, social and environmental values. The willingness of the European Parliament to support GIs to continue in this direction and to provide a more appropriate legal framework, which takes into consideration sustainable development criteria, is in line with our sector’s demands. It will reinforce the GIs contributions to the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork objectives. We welcome this orientation which meets the expectations of many European citizens and look forward to constructive negotiations with Member States.” concludes Claude Vermot-Desroches, President of oriGIn.
