The global alliance of Geographical Indications (GIs) celebrates the 2021 World Intellectual Property Day

The global alliance of Geographical Indications (GIs) celebrates today the 2021 World Intellectual Property Day. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) initiative is dedicated this year to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which represent the backbone of sectors producing goods which quality is linked to their geographical environment.

In commenting the 2021 World IP Day, oriGIn Managing Director Massimo Vittori said: “Millions of small and medium-sized enterprises around the world have invested on Geographical Indications to protect a tradition and thrive in the markets of wines, spirits, agricultural products and handicrafts. Geographical Indications represent a powerful intellectual property rights to add value to products deeply rooted in a given geographical environment, with its natural features, tradition and culture”.

According to the President of oriGIn – Claude Vermot-Desroches – “Geographical Indications contribute to small and medium-sized enterprises resilience, flexibility and capacity to face emerging sustainability challenges. Following up on the tremendous progress achieved over the last years, oriGIn invites policy-makers at the national, regional and global level, to further strengthen regulatory frameworks affecting Geographical Indications and provide innovative instruments to maximize the contribution of Geographical Indications to a more sustainable world”.
