08/07/2025- oriGIn advocates for the inclusion of GIs as legitimate rights under the UDRP

The World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Center (WIPO Center) and the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) have convened a project team to conduct a review of the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP): WIPO-ICA UDRP Review.

An Initial Report of the WIPO–ICA UDRP Review Project Team has been published in April this year.

While the Project Team recognizes that the success of the UDRP could encourage its expansion beyond trademark-based cybersquatting cases (for instance to GIs), it does not recommend that the ICANN’s Phase 2 Review consider, as part of its initial work, the expansion of the UDRP scope. The Project Team believes that such considerations should be addressed in a separate work track, if at all, to avoid adding to an already delicate and complex policy review process.

On 27 June, oriGIn submitted comments to the WIPO-ICA Initial Report (available here), advocating for the inclusion of GIs as legitimate rights under the UDRP.
