The Global Alliance of Geographical Indications (GIs) welcomes the European Commission’s proposal to the Council for the signature and conclusion of two trade agreements: the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement (EMPA) and the EU-Mexico Modernised Global Agreement (MGA).
Once the respective ratification processes are complete, over 330 European GIs will receive enhanced protection across key Latin American markets. In Mexico, this will add to the 232 EU spirit GIs already protected since 1997. On the other hand, approximately 220 GIs from Mercosur countries and 20 GIs from Mexico will be granted full protection within the European Single Market (six Mexican spirit GIs have enjoyed EU protection since 1997). This in the context of free trade agreements that will lower tariffs and other barriers to trade.
“In a world marked by growing uncertainty, these agreements deliver a powerful and timely message: the preservation of a rules-based, fair, and transparent global trading system is critical”, said Riccardo Deserti, President of oriGIn.
“We are pleased that the EMPA the MGA acknowledge the unique qualities, authenticity, and sustainable development potential of both EU and Latin American GIs. Latin America is one of the most vibrant areas in terms of GI development, and we are excited about the future possibilities. Building on this momentum, we will establish the oriGIn Latin America antenna at our forthcoming General Assembly in Morelia (Mexico), further strengthening oriGIn presence in the region” Deserti continued.
“We strongly encourage political authorities to approve these agreements swiftly and ensure their full implementation. It will be crucial to monitor their enforcement, especially with respect to the compromise solutions adopted for a number of GIs. We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the success of these agreements” Deserti concluded.
