As part of the National Agriculture Fair in Santarém, the seminar “Geographical Indications as Strategic Assets – From Local Heritage to Global Impact” will take place on 9 June 2026. The event will bring together public policymakers, producers, sector organizations, and experts to explore how Geographical Indications (GIs) can drive Portugal’s economic growth and strengthen territorial development.
Organized by QUALIFICA / oriGIn Portugal, the seminar offers a platform for strategic discussion on competitiveness, innovation, sustainability, and institutional coordination, within the framework of the European Union’s new Action Plan for Geographical Indications.
A Strategic Asset for Territorial Development
Geographical Indications have become key tools for differentiating, protecting, and enhancing products tied to specific territories. Beyond their cultural and heritage value, GIs act as instruments of economic policy, with a direct impact on territorial cohesion, internationalization, and the sustainability of production systems.
Program
The seminar is organized into two thematic panels, followed by a concluding strategic discussion:
- Panel 1 – From Local Heritage to Territorial Intelligence
Examines the role of GIs in fostering territorial cohesion, engaging local stakeholders, and sharing practical experiences. - Panel 2 – Global Impact: Market, Innovation, and Sustainability
Addresses challenges in international competitiveness, digital transformation, tourism integration, and sustainability standards. - Final Discussion – Strategic Agenda for GIs
Focuses on national and European priorities, sectoral coordination, and the future positioning of Portuguese GIs.
The seminar will conclude with a networking session and a tasting of GI products, encouraging direct interaction among participants.
Target Audience
The seminar is aimed at public policymakers, producers, producer organizations, sector associations, researchers, and professionals involved in territorial and agri-food development.
