#ProtectioninAfrica: Scotch Whisky recognized as GI in Botswana

Scotch Whisky has recently been recognized as a GI in Botswana under the Industrial Property Act 2010, becoming the first foreign GI to be registered there. While Botswana is a relatively small export market, the value of direct shipments of Scotch in 2014 was up 163% to £456,728 from £173,638 in 2013. Scotch Whisky is now recognized in over 70 countries.

This achievement shows 2 important elements:

  1. The tremendous potential for quality products in Africa as economies develop together with robust middle classes;
  2. As popularity and reputation grow in a given market (as it is the case for Scotch Whisky across Africa!), attempts are made to try to take unfair advantage of the GI success, for example by trying to sell fakes. Recognition as a GI in such markets is crucial to protect against such illegal activities.

Congratulations to the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA)!

Early in July, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized “Champagne” as world heritage. The UNESCO world heritage status covers the vineyards, “les maisons” and the cellars of Champagne, which correspond to “the places where sparkling wine was developed using a second fermentation method in the bottle from the beginning of the 17th century until its early industrialisation in the 19th century”: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/05/unesco-champagne-world-heritage-united-nations-french?CMP=share_btn_tw

Meanwhile, the World Trademark Review – an independent daily news and information service dedicated to legal trademark issues – assigned the Industry Awards 2015: the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia won the “Latin America Team of the Year” 2015 Award and the Federation of Swiss Watch Industry the “Not-for-profit Organisation Team of the Year” 2015 Award: http://www.wtrindustryawards.com/2015/Winners.aspx
