The IPI considers the “Guidelines / Sustainability Strategy for GIs”, developed by the FAO and oriGIn , a powerful and useful tool to increase the sustainability of existing and potential GI value chains. In this context, the IPI and oriGIn have already cooperated to support the producers of the Peruvian GI “Café Villa Rica” in elaborating a sustainability strategy through an inclusive process involving relevant stakeholders in the geographical area.
Based on this positive experience, the IPI and oriGIn have decided to join forces to further enhance the sustainability of GI value chains. The collaboration will cover:
- Policy aspects: promoting the FAO/oriGIn methodology at the national and international level.
- Technical cooperation: applying the FAO/oriGIn methodology in cooperation projects the IPI carries out on behalf of SECO, whenever support regarding sustainability is requested by project partners.
- Research: cooperating in research related to GIs and sustainability.
