05/06/2026-Official inauguration of oriGIn Latin America Office in Guadalajara

On 27 May, the official inauguration of the oriGIn Latin America Office took place in Guadalajara (link to the gallery). The office is hosted by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT).

The inauguration was held in the framework of the Annual Meeting of Directors of Intellectual Property Offices of Latin America, co-organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) (link to the programme).

This historic milestone for oriGIn comes at a significant moment for Geographical Indications (GIs) in Latin America, following the provisional application of the EU–Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement, which entered into force on 1 May 2026, and the official signing of the EU–Mexico Modernised Global Agreement on 22 May 2026 (link to our press release).

The speech delivered by oriGIn President Riccardo Deserti on the occasion of the inauguration is available here.

The oriGIn Latin America Office will actively engage with policymakers and intellectual property offices across the region to strengthen the positioning of GIs as a key instrument for economic development, sustainability, and territorial value creation in Latin America. It will also advocate for GIs to remain a policy priority and to be firmly embedded within a multilateral, transparent, fair, predictable, and rules-based system. In doing so, it will contribute to the development of international dialogue platforms that enhance the legitimacy and global visibility of the GI system. In addition, the oriGIn Latin America Office will promote the development of robust producer-group governance and management models to help GIs in the region to establish or reinforce existing associations, and seek to expand oriGIn’s membership base throughout the region.
