In 2018, the FAO and oriGIn had developed the Sustainability Strategy for Geographical Indications (SSGI) to support groups and associations to respond to sustainability challenges through a participative approach within value chains.
Since then, the FAO/oriGIn collaboration has continued, focusing on the selection of relevant sustainability indicators for GIs. A number of SSGI principles have guided this process, while the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture (SAFA) has provided the structure to align it with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other widely recognized sustainability frameworks. As a result of this collaboration, this year a database of 372 robust sustainability indicators that are relevant to GIs has been identified. A paper presenting this work was published in July by the “Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute”.
