GI protection for non-agricultural products’ names in the EU

nonagrinewsweb2oriGIn is in favor of the establishment of a sui generis community system of recognition and protection of non-agricultural GIs, including some mechanisms of administrative enforcement (ex officio),  which is simple and transparent, which recognizes the link with the territory of production as an essential element, and which does not create confusion with the existing European Geographical Indications systems. Such a system would, on the one hand, contribute to add value to the huge European potential in terms traditional handicrafts (and largely benefit EU SMEs). On the other hand, it would help the EU in bilateral negotiations with countries seeking protection for their non-agricultural GIs in the European market.
